Homeowner Insurance – Am I Covered?

When a natural disaster such as a hurricane, fire or flood devastates a property, many U.S. homeowners are hit by it twice. Once by the sheer strength of nature, and twice by inadequate insurance.

Many insurance policies are hard to understand or simply much less generous today than they used to be in the past.

Did you know, for example, that standard coverage excludes flood damage?

Here are a few useful hints to increase your chances to receive compensation after a disaster hits your property:

  • Read your home policy, and be sure to understand what it covers and (more importantly) what is excluded.
  • If you live anywhere near a flood zone, be sure to buy a flood policy, either a private policy or by contacting the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • If your property is especially valuable, you might need excess flood insurance for losses above the federal policy limits.
  • Check the maximum proceeds your homeowner’s policy will pay out. A disaster may cause costs to spike to unthinkable levels.
  • Reconsider your policy or expand your coverage after a significant home improvement.
  • Inventory all your possessions, including furniture, and keep at hand proof of purchase, details such as the model and type, and keep this list somewhere safe (such as in a bank or uploading to the cloud).
  • If disaster strikes — document everything by taking pictures and videos of what happened immediately after the disaster struck your house.
